This is "becoming…"

This is my first published doll. Her name is "becoming…". She was published in the Summer 2008 issue of the Art Doll Quarterly magazine. I was both surprised and pleased when they asked for my doll to shoot within a spread of the International Quilt Show held in Houston,TX in 2008.

Shipping a doll for the first time was a nightmare. It hasn't gotten much easier either. Finding the right container, packing the doll, protecting the doll by whatever device you've decided to use, even insuring it (how do you set a price on all that work?) doesn't alieviate the fear of something happening to your "baby." I fretted the whole time she was away. Happily, the staff at Art Doll Quarterly are pros at handling newbies to the dollmaking scene as well as shooting great photos. They did their best to put me at ease. Luckily, everything went fine. I was elated when I saw that she had her own page. I wanted to buy all the local issues.

In this photo she's sitting on one of my studio tables awaiting finishing touches. As you can see in the close-up, I used hand stitches to gather the fabric for making the "bark" of the tree. I've always been fascinated by nature and especially drawn to trees. The thought of yearning to be a tree was the inspiration for the doll. If you can imagine it, you can figure a way to create it. Of course, belonging to a local group of very talented dollmakers willing to share their experience helps a great deal. Thanks Material Girls !
